Four Square

Another project from my backlog of things I haven’t been posting — this one is actually two months old now.

Four Square

I wanted to create a visual pattern that was extremely simple, but open to interpretation. Its amazing how you can trick your brain into ‘seeing’ different movements in the same oscillating pattern.

Try this: Watch the two dots move for a bit. As your eyes track the blue dots, do you see:

1. The two dots are oscillating up and down
2. The two dots are oscillating left and right
3. The two dots are chasing each other in clockwise circles
4. The two dots are chasing each other in counterclockwise circles

Once you see one of these movements, see if you can trick your brain into seeing the dots move in a different way.

Isn’t it fascinating?

I took it one step further and made a 2×2 grid of the same pattern: Four Square [Revisited]

This one has even more visual possibilities. In addition to the visual modes from the original Four Square, you can see diamonds moving left and right or up and down, parallelograms alternating orientations left and right, and a variety of other geometric movements defined by the dots as vertices.

Unfortunately, I never quite figured out anything cooler to do with this once I developed the Processing Sketch. I considered making some small PCBs with LEDs that would flicker in this pattern, but I think the marginal returns on increasing size will decrease once I hit 8×8 or so.

What do you see? Got any cool ideas for what to do with this? Please comment and let me know!
